Silver Spring sits on the edge of Washington — that is the whole job
Almost nothing we drive in Silver Spring stays in Silver Spring. The work is a federal employee getting to a 7am meeting downtown, a visiting consultant staying near the Metro and working three DC offices in a day, a family leaving for BWI before dawn, a medical visitor coming in from Dulles. The town is close enough to the District that people assume the transport is trivial, and far enough out that a bad plan costs them an hour on the Beltway.
HSB Sedan Service is based in Springfield, Virginia and works this metro every day. That matters more than a local address: the same chauffeurs who run diplomatic delegations and recurring International Monetary Fund transportation in Washington are the ones who collect you in Silver Spring.
Airport transfers: what the wait time actually means
We include 60 minutes of complimentary wait on airport arrivals, and the number matters less than when the clock starts. It starts when your flight is gated — not at the scheduled arrival time on your ticket. A flight that lands 40 minutes late does not spend 40 minutes of your wait window sitting on a runway.
We track flights in both directions. Delays are what travellers worry about; early arrivals are what actually strand them, because the car was dispatched against a timetable instead of against the aircraft. If you land early, the chauffeur moves early. Meet-and-greet inside the terminal is available, and so is gate greeting on request. The mechanism is worth stating plainly, because no car service controls it: reaching the gate requires a gate pass, and the pass is issued by your airline at its discretion, under its own rules. We make the request when you ask us to at booking; the airline decides. Where it is granted, a greeter meets you off the aircraft and walks you out. Where it is not, you are met in the arrivals hall instead, and we tell you before the day rather than on it.
Silver Spring sits between three airports with genuinely different characters, and the right choice is not always the nearest one. We will tell you honestly which works better for your departure time rather than the one that suits us. See Maryland airport transfers.
For a day with more than two stops, book the chauffeur, not the trip
A lot of Silver Spring work is really a Washington day with a Maryland start. Hourly as-directed is the structure that fits it: the chauffeur is yours for a block of hours, waits outside each meeting, follows the schedule as it changes, and keeps coats and laptop bags in the vehicle between stops. Nothing gets rebooked when a session runs long, because the car never left.
It is almost always calmer than stringing together separate transfers, and for anyone working several DC offices from a Silver Spring base it is the obvious answer. Details on hourly as directed service.
Who is driving, what they have signed, and how you are billed
Every HSB chauffeur is background checked, drug tested and licensed for the vehicle they operate. Non-disclosure agreements are available and signed before the assignment begins, not afterwards — which matters for the government, legal and healthcare work this corridor generates.
Established corporate and institutional accounts are billed Net-30, consolidated into one invoice with cost-centre references per trip. Every quote is confirmed in writing before the day, tolls and parking included, so nothing appears afterwards that was not agreed. Cancellation is free up to 6 hours before your scheduled pickup time. Rate structure is on the rates page; for a firm number on a specific itinerary, call and we will quote it properly.
Vehicles run from executive sedans for up to three passengers, through premium SUVs for up to six with luggage, to Mercedes Sprinters for groups of up to eleven. Photographs and specifications are on the fleet page.
Which Airport, and Why It Is Rarely the Nearest One
Silver Spring is one of the few places in the region with a genuine three-way choice, and the honest answer is that distance is the least useful way to make it. BWI is usually the easiest run from here: out along the Beltway and up I-95, or on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, with the awkward part at the Beltway junction rather than on the open stretches. It is also the airport Silver Spring residents underuse, because it feels like the Baltimore one.
Reagan National is the shortest in miles and the most exposed in practice, because getting there means going through the District — down 16th Street or Georgia Avenue, or round the Beltway to I-395 — and then across a bridge. At the wrong hour the mileage tells you almost nothing about the journey. Dulles is the hardest of the three from Silver Spring for a simple structural reason: it puts you on the western half of the Beltway, in the direction that loads worst, and there is no clever way round that.
So the question we ask is your flight time and your airline, not your postcode. A 6am departure and a 5pm departure from the same house are different problems, and they do not always point at the same airport. If your airline flies from more than one, we will say which we would use and why, including when that means talking you out of the nearest one.
Getting Into FDA White Oak Without Sitting in the Screening Queue
A real share of the Silver Spring work is White Oak: the FDA campus at 10903 New Hampshire Avenue, which generates a steady flow of advisory-committee visitors, inspectors, counsel and industry delegations, most of them arriving from an airport that morning. It is a secured federal campus, not an office park, and the entrance you use decides how your arrival goes.
There are two relevant entrances off New Hampshire Avenue. The Michelson Road entrance is the one for vehicles that are going to park on campus, and it carries a required vehicle security screening before you reach the car parks. The Mahan Road entrance is the one for visitor drop-off and pickup, at the circle in front of Building 1 — and vehicles dropping off or collecting there do not have to go through the vehicle screening at all.
For a chauffeured arrival that distinction is the whole difference between stepping out at the door and sitting in a queue you did not need to join. Our chauffeurs use Mahan Road for drop-offs and collections as a matter of course. You will still go through personal security screening inside, as every visitor does, so allow for that in your schedule rather than in the drive — and tell us your meeting time rather than a target arrival time, so we can work backwards from it properly.
What the Purple Line Has Actually Closed
Downtown Silver Spring has been a construction site for years and is not finished. The Purple Line was around 90 per cent complete in May 2026, when the last rail was laid at the future 16th Street-Woodside station here in Silver Spring, but the line is not expected to open to passengers until late 2027 — overhead electrical wires and systems testing still to come. Periodic light-rail testing between Riggs Road and Long Branch began on or about 7 November 2026.
The parts that affect a pickup today are narrower and more stubborn than the headline. The Spring Street Bridge has been closed since June 2024 and remains closed, with a reopening date still being determined. Work at Silver Spring Station and the Transit Center has been running through 2026. Around all of that, lane arrangements and turn restrictions on the downtown approaches change on relatively short notice.
The practical consequence is that a saved route is a liability here, and so is a pickup point chosen from a map. We work the live road rather than a default, and for an early airport run out of downtown Silver Spring we will sometimes propose a pickup a block off your address rather than at it — which is faster than watching a car try to reach a kerb that is currently behind a barrier. If you are on or near Spring Street, Wayne Avenue or Colesville Road, say so when you book and we will confirm the meeting point with you the day before. Cancellation is free up to 6 hours before pickup if the plan changes.
